Chapter Twenty-Four

Hearing the phone ringing, which it has been doing for a while now, Bess saved the two or three images she was worked on for fun and for Dyalessia. She wasn't sure how many times the phone had rung before she noticed the sound, but from experience she was sure that the phone had rung more than once. Running across the room, Bess grabbed the phone off the cradle.

“I'm here. Hello?”

The sound of laughter on the other end of the line caused Bess to frown at first. Bess would be pissed if whoever was calling was someone that wanted to sell her something, or waste her time. Bess's frown turned into a smile a moment later as she realized who was calling.

“Hi, Bess. It's Mira. You sound like you were busy. My apologies for pulling you away from the zone you were in if you were creating new pieces of artwork. However, I said I would call.”

“Mira. Hi. Right, you told me that last night.” Looking out the window now, Bess blinked when she saw that half the day was gone and she had spent hours working on the pieces that put her into the zone that Mira mentioned. “Right. We're supposed to be having dinner.”

“That's right. I figured that I better call you an hour or two before our dinner date, which is at seven. Giving you advanced warning would give you time to get ready. So, that's why I'm calling, and this is your advanced warning.”

Feeling amused that Mira seemed to know how to treat an artist, Bess's laughter could be heard over the line as Bess's interest in Mira grew stronger.

“Thank you for the call. So... where are we going for our dinner date? I'm asking only because I need to know what I should wear.”

“Oh. I would keep it a surprise. All I'll say is that a pair of good jeans, a blouse, and good footwear is fine for the place I have in mind.”

“Ah, you want to keep me in suspense, huh? All right, Mira. I see what you're trying to do, and I'll play along for now.”

Mira's laughter returned at how Bess teased her. Hearing that sound on the other end of the phone, Bess grinned to herself before her laughter could be heard from her end of the phone.

“Good. I like it when a woman lets me play along. It ruins the fun when the person I'm with won't let me keep her in suspense.”

“Is that so, Mira? I admit, hearing those words makes me wonder how many women you have taken you out for dinner dates, and why they won't let you keep them in suspense.”

“Now, Bess, that would be telling, and I never reveal that information on the first dinner date.”

“Huh. Then do you reveal it on the second dinner date?”

The blend of their laughter could be heard on each end of the phone again, knowing both of them were flirting with each other over the phone. “Now, now, Bess,
